Double Trouble: Lexi x2 win a Double Hoo!
Congratulations to undergraduate researcher Lexi Vesselinov and graduate student Lexi Johnson for being awarded a Double Hoo Award!
A cappella star Jess takes center stage!
Jess Thanos nailed her solo performance of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas“, a duet sang with fellow Neuroscience Graduate Program student, David Tyus. Their graduate student a capella group, The First Harmonics, performed a diverse lineup of songs during their beautiful winter concert.

Ringing in the festive season with a nostalgic “spirit week”
Themes included: Twin Day, Brain Immunology and Grain (BIG) Farmer’s Day, Festive/Ugly Sweater Day, Swaggy Shoe (Dress Like John) Day, and Pajama Day.

The lab attends BIG Symposium at WashU
The lab had an incredible time learning about some amazing new science at the BIG (Brain Immunology and Glia) Symposium! It was our first in-person conference in quite a while. We enjoyed meeting leaders in our field and interacting with other trainees.
Hannah gives a stellar talk at the 2022 BIG Symposium
Hannah Ennerfelt was selected to give a talk at the WashU BIG Symposium alongside other impressive scientists in our field. Her talk was titled “SYK coordinates neuroprotective microglial responses in neurodegenerative disease”.

Third year undergraduate Coco Holiday was awarded a prestigious Harrison Fellowship to continue her research exploring the role of CLEC7A in microglia in Alzheimer’s Disease in collaboration with graduate student Hannah Ennerfelt.
First year undergraduate Ava Hollis was awarded a Double Hoo Award to support her work with graduate student Kristine Zengeler exploring inflammasome function in seizures.
We are looking forward to having Coco and Ava around this summer!

The Lukens crew joins other BIG center labs on a brisk fall day for an annual hike.
Lab members and other BIG center colleagues ride for Bike MS
Kristine, Hannah, Jess, Aman, and Elizabeth join other members of the Department of Neuroscience and BIG center to participate in Bike MS: Colonial Crossroads! Participants biked either 62 or 33 miles to raise awareness and support for Multiple Sclerosis. This year the team raised over $5,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society!
Ashley named Most Outstanding Graduate Student for the MIC Department!
A well-deserved recognition for Ashley’s outstanding scientific accomplishments as well as her wonderful contributions to the intellectual and scientific environment of the Department of Microbiology, Immunnolgy, and Cancer. Congratulations!
