An evening in the lab for the community

The Lukens lab hosted some members in the Charlottesville community as a part of UVA’s Mini-Medical School program!

This free community program provides a behind-the-scenes look at the medical profession over the course of 7 sessions held in the School of Medicine. Participants include high school students, UVA faculty and staff, retirees, and more.

During their evening in the Lukens lab, mini-med school participants learned about Alzheimer’s disease and current research methods to study AD mouse models (behavioral analysis, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, etc) from current grad students Josh Samuels and Lexi Johnson. Participants toured the BIG center and Lukens lab space, including a chance to look at brain cells under a state-of-art confocal microscope and photos with a human brain.
